Avoiding Holiday Plumbing Disasters

The holidays are a wonderful time to enjoy good cheer and good food with family and friends. The last thing you want is to have to deal with a plumbing emergency. Here are some tips to avoid any issues.

Holiday meal laid out on the table.

Watch Your Kitchen Sink. Never pour fats or grease down the drain, as they can harden and cause a blockage. Be sure to put them in a disposable container and throw them in the trash. Also, be careful when using your garbage disposal. Starchy items like potato peels and pasta can stick inside your plumbing. Fibrous vegetables like celery, squash, and pumpkin can wrap around garbage disposal blades, and items like egg shells, bones, coffee, and rice are too hard for disposal blades to tackle.

Take Care of Your Toilets. Whether guests are just visiting or staying with you during the holidays, make sure everyone follows basic toilet etiquette. Nothing besides toilet paper should be flushed. This includes “flushable” wipes, feminine hygiene products, cotton balls, paper towels, and other paper products.

Don’t Stress Your Water Heater. Don’t allow guests to take back-to-back showers. Wait at least 20 minutes in between, and don’t run other hot water appliances like dishwashers at the same time. Check your water heater’s settings to make sure they are set to best accommodate your number of guests.
